Ice pressures at the shore of Lincoln Bay / by G.J. Irwin. : DR52-17/12-1975E-PDF
"With increasing offshore activity in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, there is a continuing need for more detailed knowledge of forces and pressures of pack ice acting in coastal regions. In July 1974 pack ice acting on the shores of Lincoln Bay, N.W.T. presented an opportunity for making an order of magnitude determination of sea ice pressure in the littoral zone. From considerations of ice uplift, block dimensions and density, moments in turning an ice block, and effort in ploughing beach material, horizontal pressures at the shore were calculated to be of the order of 0.1MPa. Such a value, if typical of impact pressures at a protected portion of the Ellesmere Island coastline, indicates that ice floes grounding on shore should pose little threat to many types of shoreline installation"--Abstract, page iii.
