"The oxygen electrode is a critical component in a number of devices which generate electrical power. In fuel cells and metal/air batteries oxygen, either pure or from the air, is electrochemically reduced at the oxygen electrode as part of the process which generates electricity. When a metal/air battery is electrically recharged or an electrolyzer is used to generate hydrogen, oxygen is evolved at the oxygen electrode. A critical problem is the effectiveness and duration of life of the electrocatalyst which promotes these reactions"--Introduction, page 2.
