Ambient micro-vibration measurements in geotechnical engineering : a practical approach to the HVSR method / D. Perret, B. Dietiker, S.P. Gravel, T. Fournier, A.J.-M. Pugin. : M183-2/9200E-PDF

"Over the past decade, the geotechnical community has become increasingly interested in the single-station horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method based on the recording of ambient micro-vibrations at the ground surface. The aim of this method is to calculate the ratio of the Fourier amplitude spectra of the horizontal and vertical components. When the shear-wave velocity contrast between the bedrock, or a dense layer, and the overlying soil is sufficiently high, the HVSR curve usually shows a sharp peak at a frequency corresponding to the fundamental frequency of the site. Due to its simple field implementation and low cost, this technique is well suited to the mapping of the fundamental frequency for assessing potential double-resonance effects between the subsoil and structures built above it. This technique can also be used to estimate bedrock depth and to extrapolate shear-wave velocity profiles down to a deep bedrock in site-specific dynamic response analyses. This open-file report is an edited version of a paper presented in September 2024 at the 77th Canadian Geotechnical Conference in Montreal"--Abstract, page iii.
