Coastal biodiversity survey (PAC2022-036) in Caamaño Sound and Finlayson Channel in British Columbia, Canada : 2022 cruise report / by Beatrice Proudfoot [and 26 others]. : Fs97-6/3637E-PDF

"From May 18th-June 13th, 2022, Fisheries and Oceans Canada conducted a coastal biodiversity survey (PAC2022-036) aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Vector to characterise intertidal and subtidal biodiversity along British Columbia's Central Coast in support of marine conservation and emergency response initiatives. During Leg 1, scientific dives using a remotely operated vehicle were conducted in the Caamaño Sound – Douglas Channel Marine Conservation Targets (MCT) area and above the recently identified cold-water coral reef, known now by its Wakashan name q̓áuc̓íwísuxv, and newly discovered glass sponge reefs in Finlayson Channel. The dives documented the abundance, condition, and extent of reef-building coral (Lophelia pertusa) and sponges, and the location and condition of hydrocoral, large soft corals, other glass sponges, and rockfish. During Leg 2, eight nearshore sites in Caamaño Sound were surveyed using a suite of techniques: beach seining, drone surveys, environmental DNA (eDNA), wildlife cameras, infauna/epifauna surveys, baited remote underwater video surveys, and shoreline debris surveys. Each technique detected a unique suite of species, highlighting the complementary nature of the sampling plan. Leg 3 activities centered on collecting near-bottom and surface eDNA water samples and microplastic sampling in Caamaño Sound and over q̓áuc̓íwísuxv. eDNA detections included two species of conservation concern (Northern Abalone and Sunflower Sea Star), European Green Crab, and Pacific Sleeper Shark. The baseline information collected during this survey will contribute to long-term monitoring of these areas"--Abstract, page xi.
