"Canada has committed internationally to taking urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 under the Convention on Biological Diversity and to preventing the extinction of threatened species under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The Species at Risk Act received royal assent in 2002 to complement existing legislation and to contribute to meeting Canada’s international commitments by providing legal protection for species at risk. The Species at Risk Act is intended to prevent wildlife species from being extirpated or becoming extinct; recover species identified as extirpated, endangered, and threatened because of human activity; manage species of special concern to prevent them from becoming endangered or threatened"--Introduction, page 1.
