Displaying digitally resampled surface meteorological data / by Jim Van Os and Paul Van Rijn. : En57-61/93-2E-PDF
"Digital image processing of meteorological data is currently a common practice for many data types, such as satellite and radar. It is not, however, as common to the surface observations of data fields such as pressure or dew point where the data alginates as an irregular set of alpha-numeric data points. These types of meteorological fields are generally treated in an more analogue sense, using either character based displays or floating point precision contoured graphics. This report summarizes the results of treating geographically irregular surface datasets with digital image processing techniques. These irregular datasets were first interpolated to a grid and saved in a database. These grids were then remapped to a series of pixel-based map projections, with the data resampled to a very fine pixel-based grid and the data values discretized to seven bit limits, in effect giving every pixel of the new image a discrete value"--Introduction.
