| 520 | |a"Eight sea lamprey-producing rivers flow into areas of the lake explored in this survey. Sea lamprey ammocoetes were found off six of them in greatly varying numbers. The discovery of sea lamprey ammocoetes on an island off one of the rivers gave evidence that they traversed deep water; evidence that they live there has been collected using poison and an anchor dredge. Due to difficulties in sampling a large enough area, numbers captured have been too small for a reasonable population estimate. The numbers suggest, however, that ammocoetes may be just as numerous in deep water as they were in the better sampled shore areas"--Summary, page 1. |
