1990 and 1991 experimental commercial jig fishery for neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartrami) off the west coast of British Columbia / by William Shaw and Barry D. Smith. : Fs97-6/2045E-PDF

"A joint Canada-Japan experimental commercial jig fishery for neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartrami) occurred off the west coast of Canada in 1990 and 1991. The important factor in determining the location of a fishing station was the presence of the 14°C to 16°C sea surface temperature isotherms. A total of 359 night and 149 day operations was conducted in 1990, and 14 night operations in 1991. Neon flying squid was the dominant species caught inside the 320 km (200 nm) Fishery Conservation Zone (FCZ) totalling 260.6 t in 1990 and 3.8 t in 1991. Fishing activities outside the FCZ totalled 59.7 t of flying squid. A method to standardize effort between machine jig and hand jig is presented. CPUE for neon flying squid in 1990 inside the FCZ was 0.088 kg/jig•hr, and outside the FCZ it was 0.072 kg/jig•hr; in 1991 CPUE was 0.056 kg/jig• hr. A comparison of catch and CPUE in relation to environmental and oceanographic factors is presented. The dominant bycatch by weight was blue shark (Prionace glauca ). In addition, three species of salmon were caught incidentally on jigs "--Abstract, page viii.
