Diving survey assessment of 1980 herring spawnings in British Columbia / by C.W. Haegele. : Fs97-4/1600E-PDF
"Diving surveys of herring spawn were made for some sections within most major geographical divisions of the coast. The most complete diving survey coverage was for the Strait of Georgia and the North Coast, there was limited coverage for the west coast of Vancouver Island and the Central Coast and there were no diving surveys in the Queen Charlotte Islands and in Johnstone Strait. Results from diving surveys were compared to results from Fishery Officer surveys. Compared to diving survey results, Fishery Officer survey results tended to underestimate the area of spawn and the quantity of eggs and there were regional differences in this discrepancy. Fishery Officers reported larger proportions of spawn on rockweed and rock, the predominant spawn substrate in the intertidal zone, than divers. Diver results showed that there are regional differences in spawn substrate type. Stock estimates from spawn deposition were made for sections surveyed by divers"--Abstract, page iii.
