A survey of commercial sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus franciscanus) populations in the Gulf Islands, November 1980 / by B.E. Adkins, R.M. Harbo, and P.A. Breen. : Fs97-4/1618E-PDF

"Divers surveyed the abundance of red sea urchins, which are commercially harvested for their gonads, at 48 sites. Sea urchins were abundant enough to count in quadrats at 27 sites. The total standing stock of sea urchins available to the fishery in the southern Gulf Islands area was estimated by calculating mean sea urchin density in beds dense enough to support harvesting, and multiplying this by the total length of shoreline supporting commercial sea urchin beds. The standing stock was estimated to be 2600 t. Recruitment of juveniles (defined on the basis of size) was only 5.5% of the total population, indicating that turnover rate is very low. Quotas were therefore recommended for this area"--Abstract, page iii.
