"The northern part of Banks Island was closed to the commercial abalone fishery for the 1980 season in response to local native groups, who reported a decline in the native Indian food fishery. We surveyed 43 sites in the Banks Island area, chosen from information supplied to us both by native food fishermen and by commercial fishermen, and we evaluated each site's potential to support food and commercial fishing. Without a previous survey it was not possible to measure the impact of the commercial fishery and estimate competition between the two fisheries; but we observed potential for conflict"--Abstract, page iii.
