"Swept-volume midwater trawl surveys were carried out in two areas of the Strait of Georgia during March 24-May 2, 1981, to determine the absolute abundance and distribution of Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) and walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) during the spawning period. A total estimated biomass of 139,000 t and 85,000 t were present in Winchelsea Island-Sand Heads area during March 24-April 4 and April 22-May 2, respectively. Pacific hake accounted for 125,600 t and 84,400 t of the total biomass during these times. In the Active Pass-Point Roberts area a total estimated biomass of 12,700 t was present during April 9-12. Hake accounted for 4,400 t at this time. During all surveys, two distinct midwater layers were present throughout the study area. Hake, pollock, and spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) comprised nearly all catches made in these layers.
