Densities of juvenile Atlantic salmon as indicators of standing populations on the Miramichi River system / T.L. Marshall. : Fs97-4/1727E-PDF

"In the Miramichi River system, New Brunswick, densities of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) fry, small parr and large parr - established for as many as 72 electroseining sites per year between 1970 and 1980 were analysed according to stream-order designation for their potential to reflect total river standing populations. Analyses of covariance applied, because a demonstrated correlation between numbers of juveniles of Age n + 1 and juveniles of Age n in the previous year indicated that there were significant differences in the numbers of fry and parr in different stream orders and years. Survival rates of small parr from fry declined between upper and lower reaches of the river. Survival rates of large Parr from small parr were not significantly different between reaches. Together the two sets of survival rates contributed to the conclusion that juvenile density estimates for lower river reaches, which comprise about 56% of the total Miramichi production area, could inadequately reflect total standing populations"--Abstract, page vii.
