"The Canadian sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) tagging program continued in 1980 and 1981. This report summarizes the tagging information for these years and reviews the results that have been obtained up to December 31, 1981. This is the fourth report on this program. The previous reports summarized the tagging information and results of the 1977, 1978 and 1979 activities (Beamish et al. 1978, 1979, 1980). The primary purpose of the tagging program is to identify stocks by examining the movement of tagged adult fish. Juveniles from the strong 1977 year-class were tagged in Hecate Strait, Queen Charlotte Sound and mainland inlets (inside waters) to study recruitment to the offshore fishery. In addition, some fish were injected with oxytetracycline (OTC) as part of a study to validate the method of age determination. The report also summarizes the biological information that was collected during the tagging studies in 1980 and 1981. Tag loss and the effect of the dosage of oxytetracycline on growth and survival are discussed. The results of a study to develop escape devices for commercial trap gear are discussed. Escape devices are necessary because lost traps continue to fish. An estimate of mortality resulting from lost traps has not been determined, however it is thought to be important"--Introduction, page [1].
