"The commercial net fishery on salmon runs returning to the Central Coast (Statistical Areas 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) in 1983 was characterized by record high pink and chum catches in Areas 6 and 8 respectively. In contrast, chum returns to Area 6 were very low and the escapement was one of the lowest on record. Pink returns to Areas 8, mainly the Atnarko River, were also poor but escapements were generally good. Returns of all species to Area 7 were low resulting in limited fisheries. Sockeye returns to Area 9 were close to expected and only a one-day gillnet fishery was permitted. However, sockeye returns to Area 10 were above expectations requiring extensions in the fisheries. This report reviews management actions and documents how management decisions were made for commercial fisheries in Areas 6 to 10, what information was used, how it was interpreted and what the results were in terms of catch and escapement"--Abstract, page vi.
