The effects of pulley geometry on jacket stresses for an oceanographic tow cable / Layton E. Gilroy ; approved by W.C.E. Nethercote. : D68-22/11-1994E-PDF
"This report describes an investigation of the compressive load bearing capacity of the polyethylene jacket of an oceanographic tow cable in contact with the pulley of a fairlead. Two-dimensional non-linear finite element analysis was used to predict stresses in the tow cable jacket, and indicated that the existing pulley geometry would lead to jacket damage at desired cable tensions. This result is consistent with past experience of cable jacket damage. The pulley geometry was then modified by reducing the radius of curvature of the cross-section of the pulley to maximise the area of the contact patch of the deformed cable. Cable jacket stress levels were reduced for this modified geometry, but overall pulley diameter was too large for the existing fairlead structure. The final pulley design should be a compromise between the two described here, tending to reduce the radius of curvature of the contact patch as much as possible"--Abstract, page ii.
