"Winter oceanographic observations in the Gulf of St. Lawrence were made for the first time in February-March, 1956, when the H.M.C.S. LABRADOR was engaged in an oceanographic survey of the area. The purpose of this survey was to: a) observe the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature and salinity throughout the Gulf, b) observe the nature and extent of ice cover, c) observe the disposition and volume transport of the Gaspe Current and the Cape Breton Current and to trace the path of the Gaspe Current. Such information would make it possible to assess the effect of freezing in modifying the salinity distribution"--Introduction, winter survey, page [1].
