Investigation of a fall spawning run of lake whitefish into the Little Buffalo River, Northwest Territories / by M.M. Roberge, G. Low and C.J. Read. : Fs97-4/1820E-PDF
"In 1975, a study was conducted on the fall spawning run of lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis (Mitchill) into the Little Buffalo River, Northwest Territories to collect biological data from a discrete spawning group of lake whitefish and gather information on lake whitefish post-spawning dispersal patterns. Additional information on the post-spawning dispersal patterns and the relationship of Little Buffalo River lake whitefish to both the domestic and commercial fisheries of Great Slave Lake was undertaken in 1977. Little Buffalo River lake whitefish spawn in late September-October. Post spawning movement appears to be restricted; the maximum distance travelled was approximately 70 km. The domestic fishery relies heavily on lake whitefish from Little Buffalo River while exploitation by the Great Slave Lake commercial fishery appears to be light. Mean lengths of lake whitefish were 376 mm and 389 mm and mean ages were 7.2 yr and 8.6 yr in 1975 and 1977 respectively. In 1975 the youngest spawners, male and female were 5 yr while in 1977 the youngest male spawners were 7 yr and the youngest females were 8 yr. Fecundity was estimated to be 18 743 ova per female. Weight-length relationships were calculated. Total instantaneous annual mortality (Z) was 1.38 in 1975 and 0.97 in 1977"--Abstract, page v.
