"The analysis of circumpolar 500 mb charts presents a difficult problem with respect to data checking. As communication lines are long, transmission errors are frequent. To cut down on the time spent on checking reports it was desired to have available a means of computing the 1000-500 mb thickness which would be accurate to the order of 200 feet and which would not require the plotting of the sounding on a tephigram"--Introduction, page [1].
