"The 1984 commercial net fishery on salmon runs returning to the Nass and Skeena Rivers (Statistical Areas 3, 4 and 5) featured well above average pink catches in all three Areas, and above optimum pink escapements in Areas 3 and 4; Area 5 had below optimum pink escapement. Sockeye returns to Areas 3 and 5 were poor while Skeena River (Area 4) sockeye returns were slightly above average. Sockeye escapements were below optimum in Areas 3 and 5 but above optimum in Area 4. Catches of chum salmon were well above average in Areas 3 and 4 and about average in Area 5. Escapements of chum, chinook and coho in Areas 3 and 4 all showed significant increases over recent levels, while chum and coho escapements in Area 5 were below optimum levels. Due to the strength of the pink and sockeye returns, extended fisheries occurred from mid-July to late August in Areas 3 and 4.
