"It has been recognized by forecasters in Western Canada for some time that 500 mb. "cold lows" are responsible for many of the larger summer storms. These "cold low" storms are the source of more than half of the total summer precipitation in central and northern Alberta. For example, the average June rainfall for Grande Prairie is approximately 2.5 inches. However, during the storm of June 30-July 1 alone, Grande Prairie received 2.16 inches of rain in less than 48 hours"--Introduction, page [1].
