An anomalous Pacific cod fishery in Juan de Fuca Strait / by S.J. Westrheim and M.G. Pedersen. : Fs97-4/1891E-PDF
"During 1974-84, Canadian landings of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) from eastern Juan de Fuca Strait (MSA 19) rose precipitously to a peak of 957 t in 1981, then declined equally sharply to approximately 131 t in 1985. Prior to 1974, Pacific cod was also the principal species landed, but its annual landings rarely exceeded 100 t. Tagging experiments, landing statistics, age-frequencies, gonad condition, diet, and herring distribution were employed to explain, if possible, the anomalous cod aggregation and resulting fishery. The authors concluded that the anomalous cod aggregation in MSA 19 originated from offshore grounds, and that cod were attracted to MSA19 by an anomalous aggregation of herring inbound to spawn in Georgia Strait"--Abstract, page iii.
