Five hundred sixty-four samples were collected from 9 stations over 33 sampling periods. The estuarine zone macro zooplankton was dominated by cladocerans and calanoid copepods while calanoid copepods and copepod nauplii were predominant in the transition zone. The marine zone was dominated by calanoids and eggs. The micro zooplankton was dominated by calanoid copepods and copepod nauplii in all three zones. The juvenile chinook salmon examined from the Campbell River area in 1983 and 1984 utilized four important food categories. Calanoids, amphipods, harpacticoids, and cladocerans were consumed by both the hatchery and wild chinook. The hatchery fish also ate cumacea while insects and decapod zoea were important in the wild chinook diets. The Miller nets sampled the calanoids and cladocera effectively. Insects and epibenthos, such as amphipods, harpacticoids and cumacea, require other sampling methods"--Abstract, page vi. |
