520 |a"Defence Research Establishment Ottawa is pursuing an in-house research activity in spread-spectrum technology to support development of robust, anti-jam satellite communications for the military. The in-house effort consists of developing a system simulator to research the techniques involved in spread-spectrum synchronization. For these experiments, a Hopping Synthesizer Controller is required to drive a frequency synthesizer, and is the subject of this report. The controller was built on a single board using a digital signal processor for calculations and an erasable programmable logic device for interfacing. It provides the pseudo-random hopping sequence, modulation, channel selection and Doppler precorrection. The Hopping Synthesizer Controller can drive the frequency synthesizer at hop rates up to 25 khops/s. Four configurations are supported: operation within either the payload or ground terminal simulator, for uplink or downlink. Each configuration supports commands from a Synchronization Controller and special uplink and downlink synchronization modes. In this document the software and hardware details are provided along with a user guide for the board"--Abstract, page iii.
