Freshwater risks are greatest during adult migration and spawning, with elevated temperatures and Ichthyophonus infections potentially causing 'carry-over' effects on egg and alevin survival. Marine risks include warming ocean temperatures and prey shifts during the maturing adult stage, as well as predation during the early marine stage.
