"In the summer of 2024, Global Affairs Canada purchased a US $6.6 million (C$9 million) condominium in Midtown Manhattan to replace the aging official residence of the Consul General of Canada in New York. Officials had raised concerns about the condition of the previous residence – in use since 1961 and last renovated in 1982 – as early as 2014. After reviewing the options, Global Affairs Canada concluded that selling the old property and purchasing a new one would be more cost-effective than undertaking renovations. Between August and November 2024, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates held nine hearings to examine the transaction and assess whether it provided value for money.
