Trade in the presence of endogenous intermediation in an asymmetric world / by Cillian Ryan. : C23-328/1988E-PDF

"This paper endogenously derives intermediation services in a general equilibrium setting. It shows that, contrary to previous suggestions, technical improvements in servicing can lead to a fall in domestic output, a rise in the size of the service sector, and an increase in all agents' welfare. It further suggests that, if there are asymmetries in production or service technology, the trading pattern under autarky may be inefficient relative to free trade due to the presence of excess capacity and "servicer self-trading". Thus, in addition to the conventional gains from free trade, there are gains due to an "as if" improvement in service technology"--Abstract.
