5203 |a"Data on salmon migration direction and speed is crucial for understanding the Tyee test fishery. Split-beam sonar systems can provide these data. The feasibility of operating a split-beam hydroacoustic salmon enumeration facility on the Skeena River was determined. The sites identified and studied were the Tyee area, Sankey Point and upstream of the Copper River. The site upstream of the Copper River proved the most suitable for shore-based split-beam enumeration. The salmon showed bank oriented migration at this site. The Tyee and Sankey point sites were not suitable for shore-based split-beam enumeration. Salmon detection at Sankey Point was poor. The Tyee area encompasses a large volume of water and is subject to large tidal changes. This would not allow effective enumeration with shore-based split-beam systems. Significant acoustically determined fish densities were present at Tyee during times when the test fishery was not active, however, there was no relationship between acoustic density estimates and the test fish catches"--Abstract, page iv.
