"A study was undertaken to assess the use of a pulp mill effluent mixing zone by chinook salmon during winter (1993/94) in the Fraser River near Prince George, B.C. The abundance and residency of juvenile chinook was examined in the effluent mixing zone and in an upstream reference zone. Snorkel surveys of the nearshore zone of the river, conducted at night, were used to assess fish abundance. Juvenile chinook were captured with a diver operated, submersible electrofisher and marked with freeze brands to assess residency. Additional snorkel surveys and conventional backpack electrofishing were conducted in the effluent and reference zones during the day to document the diel movements of juvenile chinook in winter. …"--Abstract, page iv.
