Claiming legitimacy : oral tradition and oral history / [Julie Cruikshank]. : Z1-1991/1-41-10E-PDF

“A concern that many voices are systematically erased from written history has been recognized for a long time now in northern aboriginal communities. It is fundamental to the collaborative work that has preoccupied me in the Yukon where I lived for many years and where I continue to work. This paper is based on questions that I have heard raised repeatedly since I first went to northern Canada in the late 1960s. But it also draws on scholarship from other parts of the world where similar questions are being asked. I will try to use examples with which I am familiar to formulate broader propositions for discussion at our meeting”--Intro., p. 1.
