A frontier fur trade blacksmith shop, 1786-1812 / John D. Light and Henry Unglik. : R61-2/9-18E-PDF

"This study deals with an early nineteenth century fur trade blacksmith shop at Fort St. Joseph, Ontario, probably in use before 1810. Artifacts are examined to determine the shop layout, the ownership of the shop, and the kinds of activities in which the smith engaged. The technology, the method of manufacture and the manner of construction of five iron axes are also described. A large amount of slag and some iron fragments from the shop are examined metallographically. The study characterizes the material, ascertains its technology and identifies the ironworking process carried out in the smithy."
