Second-stage housing for battered women in Canada / by Evelyn J. Peters.: NH15-558/1990E-PDF
"This study describes the operation of second stage housing for battered women in Canada, with a view to evaluating how it meets the immediate needs of these women and provides them with alternatives to the battering relationship. Three main research areas are emphasized. First, a review of available data sources on the characteristics and experiences of battered women identifies some of their needs in second-stage shelters. Then the focus turns to issues involved in translating these needs into concrete expressions of design, location, service provision, and shelter management and organization. Second-stage shelters in operation in Canada were contacted and asked to describe how they approached these issues. By way of conclusion, the last section evaluates the extent to which second-stage shelters in Canada can give battered women alternatives, and describes elements which contribute to successful programs and elements which interfere with attempts to meet battered women's needs"--Abstract, p. iv.
