"The paper sets out to examine the case law from the Courts of Appeal of Alberta and Quebec with respect to sentence appeals between the years 1980 and 1985. The cases were broken down into groupings by offence in an attempt to determine the frequency of appearance of various aggravating and mitigating factors in specific contexts, with a view to extrapolating general trends or patterns in the approach to sentencing at the appellate level"--Introduction, p. 1.
