OPTIMIZE : a method for estimating embodied and lifecycle energy and environmental impact of a house (report) / prepared by: Sheltair Scientific Ltd. with SAR Engineering Ltd. ... [et al.].: NH15-802/1991E-PDF

"This report describes a method for estimating the lifecycle energy requirements of a house and its environmental impact as measured in terms of both outdoor and indoor pollutant generation. It also describes how a lifecycle cost may be determined that includes external or societal costs. A computer programme OPTIMIZE, based on an Excel spreadsheet, permits a user to determine values for the aforementioned factors on a house specific basis. The report and programme focus on the energy required to construct a house, namely the embodied energy. This is derived from the Statistics Canada economic input-output model from which energy usage by all parts of the economy can be computed. Operating energy determination relies on other already established methods. The programme contains a detailed example of a 1991 built 3-bedroom Canadian house of conventional construction together with default values for other numerous input requirements"--Executive summary, p. vi.
