Tool for automated and manual validation of spatial data in a catch and effort database, groundfish fisheries operations system (GFFOS), with discussion of broader applicability to other fishery dependent...: Fs97-6/3358E-PDF
"A modular and generalizable tool was developed in Microsoft SQL Server to automatically validate geographic coordinates of fishery-dependent catch and effort data through an iterative process to identify common issues with the data’s spatiotemporal components, replace erroneous values with corrected values where available, and generate a report of errors and corrections. Two test runs were performed with datasets from the Canadian Pacific groundfish longline and trawl fisheries. An extended manual validation process was also developed and tested using a portion of the longline dataset. The automated process quickly and accurately identified errors in 5% of longline events and 7% of trawl events, and corrected a smaller proportion. The manual validation exercise successfully corrected almost all remaining errors, though it required significant effort. The speed, extensibility, and reproducibility of this validation tool make it a potentially valuable part of the quality assurance process for fishery-dependent data"--Abstract, page iv.
