"In this report we extend our previous perturbation-theory treatment of evanescent-wave gain in dielectric slabs to the case of a cylindrical dielectric waveguide, or optical fibre. The general formalism for treating evanescent-wave gain due to an active cladding material is developed, and detailed calculations of the gain coefficient ratio are presented for the TEom and TMom modes of the active optical fibre"--Abstract, page 1.
