"Aerial reconnaissance and ground monitoring were used to determine the characteristics, pattern and timing of river ice break-up on the Liard River. Ice jams and their associated effects were studied, and channel morphometry was investigated at two ice jam-prone sites. A limited program to measure pre-break-up ice thickness was initiated. Ice thickness was variable across the channel, and decreased rapidly immediately before break-up. Discharge increase was the major factor in initiating and sustaining break-up"--Synopsis.
