Liard River Basin spring flood : progress report / B.J. Grey, D.A. Sherstone ; prepared by Snow & Ice Division, N.H.R.I., Inland Waters Directorate, Environmental Management Service, Environment Canada. : En37-448/1980E-PDF

"Aerial reconnaissance and ground monitoring were used to determine the characteristics, pattern and timing of river ice break-up on the Liard River. Ice jams and their associated effects were studied, and channel morphometry was investigated at two ice jam-prone sites. A limited program to measure pre-break-up ice thickness was initiated. Ice thickness was variable across the channel, and decreased rapidly immediately before break-up. Discharge increase was the major factor in initiating and sustaining break-up"--Synopsis.
