Formal and informal investment barriers in the G-7 countries : the country chapters / prepared by Industry Canada Micro-Economic Policy Analysis staff including, Ash Ahmad, Colleen Barnes, John Knubley,...: C21-23/1-1E-PDF ; C21-23/1-1-1994E-PDF
"The purpose of this Working Paper is to examine barriers to foreign direct investment (FDI) in the seven largest industrialized countries (G-7) of the world. The paper surveys both the formal and informal obstacles to FDI in those economies. In all countries, formal controls have been liberalized over the past decade; however, the regulatory machinery needed to block FDI continues to exist in most countries. As the formal barriers to investment fell, the relative importance of informal barriers increased. The situation is similar to trade policy, where non-tariff barriers have become the focus of multilateral negotiations today after progress was made in the elimination of tariffs. These two phenomena — the liberalization of formal investment barriers and the emergence of informal ones — are the subject of this survey"--Introduction.
