Canadian environmental sustainability indicators : Canadian species index.: En4-311/2023E-PDF
"The Canadian species index indicator uses similar methods to the Living Planet Index but is based on a selection of Canadian species. It shows whether the population abundance of monitored vertebrate species have increased or decreased since 1970. The index is an "average of trends", rather than a measure of change in the total number of animals: each species, whether it is common or rare, has the same effect on the index. This, in turn, provides an integrated measure of the condition of our environment"--Page 5.
