"This discussion paper was requested during the early stages of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative(PSSI) to provide strategic direction with respect to climate change and Pacific salmon. The PSSI was announced in June 2021 as a strategic, longterm response to the negative effects of climate change, habitat loss, and fishing pressures on salmon. It is a $647-million initiative with the goal of "stemming the severe and ongoing decline of key Pacific salmon populations on Canada's West Coast and restoring them to a sustainable level for future generations of Canadians". The PSSI aims to protect and rebuild stocks where possible through habitat, harvest, and hatchery actions, as well as increased integration and collaboration. The intent of this work is to provide further scope on the topic of climate change and salmon, through identifying issues and lessons from the literature and engagement with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) staff.
