Extreme values of the terms neglected in the vorticity equation / by John Campbell and David Davies.: En57-56/614-1966E-PDF
"For each of three synoptic situations, all the terms, in the vorticity equation are computed at 1000, 850, 700, and 500 mb. When the results based on diagnostic vertical motion fields are studied in some detail, they show that the terms neglected in the Central Analysis Office baroclinic model attain their maximum magnitude in the neighbourhood of developing disturbances. In these regions, especially at 1000mb, their sum may approach or exceed that of the terms retained"--Abstract.
