Passive acoustic data to characterize and monitor the soundscape of the Salish Sea / by Rianna Burnham and Svein Vagle.: Fs97-13/1483E-PDF
"Continuous passive acoustic recordings were made at ten locations in the Salish Sea, in the coastal waters around southern Vancouver Islands, the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia and the Gulf Islands. The earliest deployments of acoustic moorings were in 2018 at six core locations (Swiftsure Bank, Port Renfrew, Jordan River, Sooke, Haro Strait and Boundary Pass) with recorders in the Gulf Islands, in Swanson Channel, and the Strait of Georgia deployed in the years following. The data collected are presented as mean and median weekly and monthly sound pressure levels (SPL) in frequency ranges that help determine the abiotic (wind, precipitation and water turbulence) and anthropogenic (commercial and recreational vessels) additions to the soundscape over space and time. In addition, frequencies used by southern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca, SRKW) for communication calls and echolocation signals were included. These whales use the Salish Sea predominantly in the summer months and much of the area has been designated as critical habitat for this population"--Abstract, page xiv.
