Quantifying the safety benefits of Rail Crossing Information Systems (RXIS) / submitted to Transport Canada ; submission by TRAINFO Corp.: T86-82/2026E-PDF
"This study evaluates the safety impacts of Rail Crossing Information Systems (RXIS) deployments at two Canadian rail crossings: the Shaftesbury Boulevard crossing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the Westwood Street crossing in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Using five weeks of baseline data and five weeks of post-deployment data at each location, the analysis focuses on changes in vehicle delay, trespassing behavior, and near-miss timing during periods when crossing warning systems are active. Trespassing events—defined as vehicle interactions occurring while warning devices are active—were used as a surrogate measure of elevated safety risk, alongside near-miss time as an indicator of available clearance between vehicles and approaching trains"--Executive summary, page [4].
