This report describes CIDA’s bilateral program in South Africa for 2003–2008. It discusses the development context of South Africa’s political and economic history; its social inequalities; key impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and development challenges such as crime, pollution, unequal land ownership, and water shortages. It also summarizes Canada’s priority to fight HIV/AIDS; its programs to improve governance and agricultural systems; and its support of South Africa’s program toward regional stability and cooperation.
