Organic geochemistry of petroleum hydrocarbons in Middle to Upper Devonian outcrop samples from Mackenzie Plain area / [by] C. Jiang, L.J. Pyle, and L.P. Gal. : M183-2/7600E-PDF

Outcrop rock samples with oil stain/odour were collected by Northwest Territory geoscientists during their 2010-2012 field trips, and submitted to the GSC for organic geochemical analysis and interpretation to investigate the sources of oil shows in the Mackenzie Plain area. Various fossil hydrocarbon molecules that contain information about their source rocks' depositional environment, organic input and thermal maturation as well as alteration such as biodegradation have been utilized in the study to relate the hydrocarbons in the outcrop samples to currently known source rocks and oil discoveries. In addition to the Canol shale of the Devonian age that had been proposed to be the main source rock for the giant Norman Wells field, the Bluefish shale was also found to have likely contributed to oil accumulations in the Mackenzie Corridor. The study also shows the likely presence of a Precambrian source rock contributing to oil occurrence in the area.
