"Bill C-39, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (unconstitutional provisions) and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, was introduced in the House of Commons by the Minister of Justice on 8 March 2017. The bill amends the Criminal Code (Code) to remove passages and repeal provisions that have been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as a provision that has been ruled unconstitutional by four provincial courts of appeal. These provisions were found to be inconsistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Charter). In addition, the bill makes consequential amendments to the Corrections and Conditional Release Act and the Youth Criminal Justice Act."--Background, p. 1.
