"In June 1985, Parliament enacted a series of amendments to the Indian Act, known as Bill C-31. The main objectives of this bill were to remove discrimination on the basis of gender from the Act, to restore Indian status and band membership rights to eligible persons (particularly women who lost their status through marriage to non-Indians) and to enable bands to assume control over their membership."--Introduction.
