"In recent years, there has been a growing demand within government and private sectors for statistical tools suitable for analysing data collected periodically over time from sample surveys, censuses and administrative sources. In view of this demand, an international symposium on Analysis of Data in Time was organized to bring together researchers and practitioners in various substantive fields from universities, government and other statistical agencies. It was sponsored by Statistics Canada and the Laboratory for Research in Statistics and Probability, Carleton University and University of Ottawa. The symposium was held October 23-25, 1989 in the Simon Goldberg Conference Centre at Statistics Canada, Ottawa, attended by about 325 registered participants. Several papers from well-known statisticians around the world were presented. The present volume contains 27 papers with varying levels of theoretical and applied content. It is believed that the wide range of topics covered in the symposium would be very useful to both researchers and practitioners engaged in various fields of statistics"--Preface, p. i.
