"Microsimulation models allow one to study the behavior of a large population over time. At Statistics Canada, health characteristics and risk factors are being added to a demographic and labor force model of the Canadian population. This paper describes a method for obtaining multivariate transition probabilities between states for use in advancing individuals in simulated time. The lack of longitudinal data means that these probabilities must be derived from cross-sectional data. The use of transition probabilities by the microsimulation model has the effect of producing smoother, more realistic, logically possible life histories."--Abstract.
